OPERA (the Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus) has recently found a loosened optical cable connecting to the GPS system. This could cause errors in measuring the distance between CERN and the OPERA site. After fixing the fault, the speed of Muon Neutrinos will be measured again in May this year.

  • The simultaneous measurement of cosmic ray muon signals in Opera and a nearby detector had shown that the two experiments saw a difference of about 60 nanoseconds in their timing measurements (60 nanoseconds = the time gap between light speed and the measured superluminous speed). A loose optical cable explains the measurement error. The team leader of OPERA has resigned.

  • This incidence demonostrates the difficulties in doing precision science.
